Editorial: Calendars running amok at UTM

Students who have been drinking the ‘Get Involved’ Kool-Aid from Student Affairs are likely to be seen running around campus confused next week as headliner events compete for the same dates and same times.

Did groups on campus actually plan? The UTM Rodeo, Pike Fights, All-Sing and a Lyric Opera Theater are scheduled to take place next week. The Rodeo is scheduled for next Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We hope no rodeo fans want to see Pike Fights, since it is scheduled to take place at the same time on Friday as the rodeo.

All-Sing is also competing with the rodeo, debuting on Saturday night. So maybe there aren’t many who have an ear for music. But, those who do will have to choose between viewing All-sing and the Saturday night opening of Hansel and Gretel by the Lyric Opera Theater.

Would it not make sense to try to have these events at different times? Pike Fights will benefit the Weakley County Reading Railroad. It would be great if the rodeo enthusiasts would have an opportunity to go to both the rodeo and Pike Fights, but shortsighted scheduling efforts will prevent such from happening.

Our trusted SGA is no different. It wants students to participate in SGA, particularly by voting in the SGA elections. How does SGA get its constituents involved? It schedules the only SGA election debate on the same night as an academic speaker that is required attendance for many students.

As our fearless leaders say, get involved. Make a choice next week in what you will attend. Either way you will be seeing bull. It may be the large bovine that’s straddled for an anticipated eight seconds by some of the greatest athletes on our campus. Or it may be UTM’s finest showing their ability to mark events on a calendar as efficiently as a drunken idiot adorned with gel pens and highlighters.
