‘Go Global’ is theme for 30th International Week

The 30th annual International Week will be observed through a variety of activities beginning April 4. Activities associated with the traditional event are open to the public.

International Week opens at noon Monday, April 4, in UC 111 with an International Trivia Contest.

The contest, sponsored by the International Student Association and the Student Government Association, will feature the Trivia America team competing with the Rest-of-the-World team in a traditional trivia contest.

A dedication ceremony in honor of the late Fumiaki Soma, a former UTM international student, is 6 p.m. that evening at the C.E. Weldon Public Library.

Soma was a student from Hirosaki University in Japan who received a scholarship from the Japanese Ministry of Education to study for a year at UT Martin. He graduated from Hirosaki University and then worked for the Hirosaki City Junior High System and later for the city board of education. He visited the city of Martin as a translator with visitors from Hirosaki City. In his will, Soma asked that the city of Martin be given a collection of books. The ceremony is to honor his memory and officially dedicate the book collection to the local library.

The week continues from 12:15-1 p.m. April 5 in 343 Gooch with a presentation by academic speaker, Dr. Sue Byrd. She will present “Small Feet, Big Steps,” which will discuss the plight and progress of women in China.

“Discovering Literature from Other Countries,” sponsored by the Hortense Parrish Writing Center, is scheduled from 12:15-1:15 p.m. International students will read selections from their respective countries’ literature in their native languages and summarize in English. Refreshments will be served.
