Proud to be a Skyhawk

It’s my second favorite time of the sports year: college basketball season.

Those of you who are returning readers know that I do, and always will, bleed Kentucky blue. Although the Skyhawks are who I cheer for, I can’t deny my Wildcat roots.

Which is why I hope I don’t get arrested this weekend when I make the trek to Durham to watch UTM take on Duke.

As a UK fan, it’s been burned into my mind to hate the Blue Devils and everything they stand for.

The 1992 NCAA championship game is the first sporting event that I can really remember crying over (although, thanks to such schools as the University of Alabama-Birmingham, Marquette, Arizona and North Carolina, I’ve had plenty of other chances to show my emotions).

Christian Lattner will always be No. 1 on my list of athletes that I dislike.

I know you’re not supposed to hold a grudge, but I just can’t get over it.

So, if you see me on Friday night/Saturday morning, make sure that I’m not carrying any blue spray paint. A small part of me has this evil plan to sneak down onto the court and change DUKE to UK...it’s just so easy.

Part of me also wants to wear a Duke t-shirt with the D and E marked out. I think that might be just a wee bit disrespectful given that I will possibly be meeting the coaches, athletic directors and sports information directors of the university.

It’s probably not the best idea to meet Coach K wearing a t-shirt with the name of his school defaced.

Oh well, I think he would understand. Loyalties run deep and can’t be changed, especially since they’ve been there since birth.

I hope that everyone tunes in for the game and cheers on the Skyhawks as they take on a big opponent.

Until next week... GO SKYHAKWS!!!!
