Response to Mulholland's letter

Ms. Mulholland,

I am disappointed by your judgment that this newspaper has sensationalized the events cited at the bottom of our October 10 issue. This was a difficult editorial decision, hardly cut and dry. We stand by our choice to run the story, as it would have in any other instance at a local newspaper. The story ran because it was news... a public figure (by definition) had broken the law. It was not based on his participation in collegiate athletics.

The "Open Discipline Records" law that was passed over the summer is ushering in a new era of campus crime coverage, one that many may be uneasy to deal with at first.
