Skyhawk baseball drops openers to Louisiana Monroe, coach optimistic about performance

Despite playing extremely well, the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team dropped their first three games of the season to The University of Louisiana at Monroe.

“Louisiana-Monroe is good, solid team” said head Skyhawk baseball coach Bubba Cates. “They beat us with fastballs.”

In the first game, the Skyhawks lost 6-1, and left five men on base. “We were down 4-1, and they hit two solo home runs,” said Cates. “I thought we played well that game.”

The Skyhawks lost 1-0 in the second game, after Louisiana-Monroe pitcher Matt Green allowed only four hits and struck out eight.

The Skyhawks managed 9 hits in the final game and lost 7-4. Nick Luper went 2-4 with 3 RBI.

The Skyhawks only allowed 3 errors in three games.

“We played very well on the defensive side,” said Cates. “We are just getting our feet wet. Our players were disappointed, but we played against a great team.”

The Skyhawks’ next game will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23 in Nashville against Vanderbilt University.
