Soccer falls to Mocs, looks ahead to Belmont

The UTM soccer team faced disappointment in its season opener against the UT Chattanooga Lady Mocs. The Skyhawks fell 4-1 in Friday’s match at Finley stadium in Chattanooga.

The Lady Mocs came out strong, scoring the first goal only five minutes into the game. They continued this effort throughout the first half, scoring all four goals before the break.

Diana Jallo was the Chattanooga standout, earning a hat trick, as she scored three of the Lady Mocs goals in the contest. Tirza Ridgely provided the fourth goal.

The Skyhawks struggled to come back, scoring their first and only goal of the game late in the second half. Freshman Sarah Bedell netted the goal for UTM, receiving the assist from senior Ginger Schmitt and fellow freshman Katie Behrens.

Skyhawk goalkeeper Megan Dempsey was able to fight off seven shots by the Lady Mocs.

UT Chattanooga outshot the Skyhawks 21 to eight. UTM is now 0-1 in regular season play.

The Skyhawks will return to competition at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, as they travel to Belmont.
