UTM charity event satisfies sweet tooth, serves cause

The Student Activities Council’s second annual Chocolate Fest was held on Valentine’s Day in the Duncan Ballroom of the University Center to raise money for Johnny Jones, a local firefighter who suffered a brain aneurysm.

Chocolate lovers were provided with various kinds of desserts including chocolate pizza, candy, ice cream and fondue. Students enjoyed chocolate covered strawberries, marshmallows and cake as well. “I love chocolate, especially chocolate with strawberries,” said Kimberly Thomas, a freshman Nursing major from Memphis. “I’m having a great time,” she added.

Those who attended came not only to enjoy the food and games, but also to help Jones. “This event features tons of chocolate goodies and it’s for a great cause,” said Tommy York, a senior English Education major from Union City.

Dr. Neil Graves provided his musical talent for the occasion. His piano music provided a light and fun atmosphere.

Throughout the night, students participated in games and were awarded door prizes. In the pudding eating contest, four contestants were each given 20 minutes to eat a large bowl of chocolate pudding. Although none of those who entered the competition were able to finish their bowl of pudding, sophomore Lance Fuhrman, a Parks and Recreation Administration major from Bruceton, won by eating the largest amount of the dessert.

Participants entered their best homemade fudge in the fudge tasting contest. The ladies of Gamma Kappa Pi won this competition.

In the M&M art contest, four teams of two people were given 20 minutes to construct a picture using M&M’s and chocolate icing.

They were to use the theme, “UTM School Spirit,” and each team was required to use M&M’s of every color in their artwork. Kathryn Bray and Kristen Griffith won this challenge with their picture of the UTM Skyhawk mascot.
