UTM hoopster invited to NBA pre-draft Portsmouth Invitational Tournament

Skyhawks senior Jared Newson has been invited to participate in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament April 5-8, the only postseason event before the NBA Draft Camp in Orlando.

Newson was one of 64 college seniors invited to play in the prestigious, four-day event. He will have a great opportunity to display his skills to more than 200 NBA representatives from all 30 teams, the NBA Operations Offices and the NBA Scouting Office.

The tournament, which will be played at Churchland High School in Portsmouth, Va., is in its 54th year of existence and is comprised of eight teams of eight players each. The tournament will include 11 games over four days.

The 6-5, forward from Belleville, Ill., earned first team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors for the Skyhawks this past season.

He averaged 18.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. He became the tenth Skyhawk player ever to score 1,000 points in a career.

Newson finished his three-year tenure at UTM with 1,347 points, and is the university’s third all-time leading scorer.

Newson earned OVC Player of the Week honors three times this past season, and he scored double-digits in 27 of 28 games.

Newson scored a season-high 29 points twice this season.
