UTM sweeps TSU in conference series, 5-1 in OVC play

The Skyhawk softball team swept an Ohio Valley Conference three game series from host Tennessee State last weekend in Nashville. The Skyhawks earned a 9-3 win in the first game, grabbed a 3-0 victory in the second game, and swept the series with a big 9-0 in the third.

The Skyhawks trailed 3-1 in the first game, but rallied to take a 5-3 advantage in the top of the fifth inning.

The Skyhawks scored one run in the sixth and three more runs in the seventh.

Senior Kristin Runyan had a two-run homer in the fifth to pace the Skyhawks, while junior Brandy Whalen went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and four stolen bases.

Senior Nicole Davis ran her pitching record to 8-1 with the win. In the second game, Megan Mizell tossed a two-hit shutout at the host Lady Tigers.

Mizell gave up a walk and struck out four. She ups her record to 6-3 on the season.

The Skyhawks scored a run in the top of the second inning and two in the third inning. Davis, Mizell and Christa Webb drove in runs for the Skyhawks.

Mizell, who tossed a perfect game a week ago against Southeast Missouri State, pitched a six-hit shutout Saturday afternoon to lead the Skyhawks to a 9-0 win over the host Lady Tigers.

The Vienna, Illinois native pitched six innings and struck out nine. She improves to 7-3 on the year and sports a 1.62 ERA.

With the 9-0 win over Tennessee State, the Skyhawks complete the three-game sweep and improve to 5-1 in the OVC race and 18-7 overall.

Skyhawk junior Jennifer Young was 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI.

Senior shortstop Kristin Runyan was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI as Skyhawk put together a 13-hit attack.

“It was nice to see Jennifer Young come through at the plate like she did,” said Donley Canary, the Skyhawks’ fourth-year head coach.

“The top of the order did an outstanding job for us.” Young, Runyan and Brandy Whalen, the top three hitters in the Skyhawks’ lineup accounted for seven of the 13 hits.

The Skyhawks broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the third and fourth innings and put together a four-run sixth inning.

The Lady Tigers got two hits each from second baseman Heather Ebersole and Leena Worrell.

TSU loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, but could not score and the game ended because of the eight-run rule. TSU stranded a total of six base runners.

With the setback TSU falls to 2-18 overall and 0-6 in the Ohio Valley Conference.

The Skyhawks return to action today as they travel to Itta, Bena, Miss., for a doubleheader against Mississippi Valley State.

They then return home for a three-game conference series against Tennessee Tech. The first game of Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Tech is 16-19 on the season with a 2-4 record in conference play.
